Painter in oil of traditional landscape and marine pictures and teacher, born Chatham, Kent. He won a scholarship to Medway College of Art in 1944 and in 1946 became an apprentice to decorative artist Arthur Charles Gull. After National Service in the Army, in 1954 Denton set up as a freelance decorative artist while gaining a Fellowship of the British Institute of Interior Designers and The Chartered Society of Designers. In 1967 he turned to full-time painting and has held several teaching posts, including Maidstone College of Art and Royal School of Military Engineering. In 1983 Denton was the winner of the Hunting Art Prize and is also a member of the RSMA, and the International Society of Marine Painters. Known as Ray Denton, he is also a member of the Hesketh Hubbard Art Society and a winner of the Charles Pears prize at the Royal Society of Marine Artists. Examples of his work are in the collections of former Prime Minister Edward Heath, Littlehampton Museum, Sussex, Laren Museum, Amsterdam, Holland, National Maritime Museum, Mystic Seaport, Connecticut, USA and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich. Denton's work has been reproduced in print form by Solomon and Whitehead Ltd, Royles, Medici Society, Gordon Fraser and Rosenstiel. His solo exhibitions include two at Folkington Manor, Polegate, Sussex in 1982 and 1985 and 'Reflections' at W. H. Patterson, London in 2001.
