A very fine and detailed etching with a crisp plate strike, by the artist Kenneth Holmes OBE (1902-1994). The scene depicts the Giudecca Canal in Venice, Italy, with the famous horizon of well-known architecture and vessels on the water. Holmes has an eye for composition, and On wove laid to card. Signed in graphite below the plate. Signed.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and mount burn. The edges are roughly cut, and there is some paper adhered to the top edge, as shown.

Artist Biography
Kenneth Holmes OBE (1902-1994) was a painter and etcher, born in Skipton, Yorkshire, who studied at Skipton School of Art, 1919-21, Leeds College of Art, 1921-23 and at the Royal College of Art, 1923-27. Leaving the Royal College, Holmes practised his art in both England and in Europe for two years, mainly in Italy. Some publications state that he was awarded the prestigious Prix de Rome, this is incorrect. He also worked in France and Holland. During the period 1930-32 he held part-time posts at Croydon School of Art and the Borough Polytechnic, London and in 1932 he was appointed Art Principal of Huddersfield College of Art and Leicester College of Art, remaining at the latter until his retirement in 1956. Holmes exhibited at the Fine Art Society, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, New English Art Club, Royal Academy, Royal Hibernian Academy and in the Harvard University Art Museums, Massachusetts, Smart Museum of Art at the University of Chicago and the Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.
His work is in collections of BM, Craven Museum, Skipton, Hunterian, New Walk Museum & Art Gallery, Tate Gallery and the Victoria & Albert Museum. He was awarded an OBE for his services to Art Education and he died in Camelford, Cornwall.
