The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor abrasion marks to the surface. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Some scuffs to the frame.

Julian Roebuck (1915-1991) was a painter and illustrator, born in the West Riding of Yorkshire. He studied at Sheffield College of Art, 1933-35 before winning a scholarship to the Slade School. In 1938, he won a Royal Exhibition to the RCA and managed to obtain a three-month deferment from call up to the army in order to complete his studies and in 1940 he won the life-drawing prize in his year. He saw active service in Italy and left the army in 1946 with the rank of Captain. In 1946 he joined the staff of Liverpool College of Art where for three years he taught drawing and painting. He later joined the staff of J. Walter Thompson and worked in advertising for many years until his retirement in the mid-1970’s. He showed at the RA, NEAC, LG and a retrospective exhibition of his work was held at the Holmdale Studio Gallery, Exeter in 1992. In his retirement, Julian Roebuck worked for Honiton Pottery. There he created many special designs including commemorative plates. One of these, his design for the wedding of Charles and Diana was so iconic that it is in the V&A Collection.
