A very fine and remarkable pastel portrait of a young girl, by the artist Josephine Streatfeild SWA (1879-1936). Rendered in exquisite detail, this meticulous half length portrait depicts a young girl, seated wearing a white lace frock, with a head of curls. Streatfeild has built a layered palette of dynamic line and form, creating a depth that is particularly hard to achieve in this medium. The sitter is positioned in a traditional manner, meeting the viewer in line of sight, in what appears to be a momentary gaze.
Handsomely presented in a substantial gilt wooden frame with dark green lined flat, and a clean cream mount, as shown. Signed to the lower right corner and dated 1926.
On wove.In very good condition overall, for a picture of this age. There is some surface loss to the paper along the lower edge, however this in no way affects the main picture. Some light foxing spots to the upper right corner. The frame has several surface marks, but is in very good condition overall. Scuffing to the corners.

Josephine Streatfeild SWA (1879-1936) was a painter, who was born Mabel Josephine Streatfeild and studied firstly at the Crystal Palace School of Art, before going to the Slade School of Fine Art and studying under Fred Brown. She exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Royal Society of Portrait Painters, RA and Society of Women Artists, of which she was an elected member. She appears to have gone to America in 1912 and became a member of the Philadelphia Society of Painters and specialised in copying old masters. She returned to England some time later before sailing for Quebec, Canada in 1920 where she became a member of the Ontario Society of Artists. Some authorities spell her surname as 'Streatfield'. Government records indicate otherwise.
