Although he was born in New York, Joseph Uhl settled permanently in Germany at an early age. He studied painting and etching techniques at the Academy of Munich, under Schmid-Reutte. Before the First World War, Joseph Uhl confined himself mainly to painting and exhibited his art throughout Germany. After the war's end in 1918, Joseph Uhl began publishing etchings and engravings dealing with figure studies, nudes, portraits and allegorical scenes and images of children. During the 1920's, Uhl's etchings were published mainly by the Berlin fine arts publisher, Wohlgemuth & Lissner.
