An intimate portrait by the well-listed artist, depicting a beautiful young lady, Betty, draped in a delicate shawl. Signed and inscribed in the lower margin. Elegantly presented in a slim wooden frame. On paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for an artwork of this age, including some discolouration to the paper. Light discolouration and foxing to the mount. Minor wear to the frame, including some scuffing and small chips along the edges.

Artist Biography

Joseph Simpson was a painter, illustrator, and printmaker born and educated in Carlisle. He went on to study at the Glasgow School of Art before relocating to London in 1905. Early in his career, he focused on poster design and soon gained the support and mentorship of renowned artist Frank Brangwyn. Simpson exhibited widely, including at the Baillie Gallery, Brook Street Art Gallery, Fitzwilliam Museum, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Gravers (ISSPG), Walker Art Gallery, Leicester Galleries, the London Salon, and the Royal Society of British Artists, which elected him a member in 1908. He also showed work with the Royal Scottish Academy (RSA) and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (RSW). During the First World War, Simpson served as an Official War Artist with the Royal Air Force. His work is held in numerous public collections, including the Ashmolean Museum, the Hunterian, the Imperial War Museums, the Scottish National Portrait Gallery, and Tullie House Museum and Art Gallery.
