This pen and watercolour wash depicts a solitary figure in red walking through a city. A bridge stands prominently illuminated in the light, while much of the surrounding scene remains shrouded in shadow. Beautifully presented in a gilt-effect frame. Unsigned. On paper.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration and foxing to the paper. Minor wear to the frame.

Artist Biography

Joseph Riley Wilmer (1883-1941) was a painter and muralist born in Falmouth. He was an early pupil of the local Falmouth School of Art which opened in 1902. Wilmer was deeply inspired by the Pre-Raphaelites. He showed at the Walker Art Gallery, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, and at the Royal Academy. Four of his paintings were exhibited at the 150th Anniversary Exhibition at the Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society in Falmouth in 1983, and he is credited with a triptych in the Warrior Chapel of Falmouth Parish Church.
