Joseph Harold Swanwick (1866 - 1929). Painter and watercolourist of genre scenes and landscapes, Joseph Harold Swanwick was born in Winsford, Cheshire. He lived and worked in Middlewich, Cheshire and later moved to Twytten House, in the village of Wilmington, South Downs, East Sussex. Swanwick first studied in Liverpool, then at the Slade underLegros and Fred Brown, and finally at the Académie Julian in Paris. He was a member of the Royal Cambrian Academy and the Royal Institute. He exhibited in London, especially at the Royal Academy, Suffolk Street and the Royal Institute from after 1889. Swanwick was the greatest downland painter of his day. His oil paintings are held in a number of public collections, including National Museums Liverpool, York Museums Trust and Reading Museum, as well as a significant collection of his drawings being housed at the British Museum.
