Description

A fine pair of 16th Century woodcuts taken from the 1574 translated copy of the Amadís de Gaula. The two wood cuts show vicious fights between knights. The woodcuts have been cut from pages of the original 1574 text translated by Antione Tyron. On laid.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There are adhesive tape marks at all four sides of each woodcut, but the image remains intact and undamaged.

Collection Information

Amadís de Gaula is a landmark work among the chivalric romances which were in vogue in sixteenth-century Iberian Peninsula, although its first version, much revised before printing, was written at the onset of the 14th century.
The earliest surviving edition of the known text, by Garci Rodríguez de Montalvo (not Ordóñez de Montalvo), was printed in Zaragoza in 1508, although almost certainly there were earlier printed editions, now lost.

Artist Biography

Jorge Coci (died 1546 ) was a German printer rooted in Zaragoza and active in the first half of the 16th century . It maintained one of the first and most important printing presses in Spain of its time.
