The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and areas of foxing. There has been an area of restoration to the lower left corner, just above the signature. Surface abrasions are visible to the centre of the image, below the sailing ship. The mount also has an area of overpainting to the lower left area.

John Wilton Adock was born in 1863 and is known as a painter in watercolour of rural landscapes. He lived in Nottingham and exhibited at the Nottingham Art Gallery in the 1880’s. By the late 1920’s, he was living at Polegate in Sussex and was a member and exhibitor at the Brighton Art Club from 1928 until his death in 1930. Some of his lesser works are just signed J Wilton. His paintings can be seen in the collection of Leicester Arts and Museums Service
