Description
A late 18th century engraving depicting women dancers on the island of Ha’apai. The island is in modern day Tonga, where Webber, the artist on Cook’s third Pacific voyage, sketched the locals and their customs. The exoticism of Polynesian dances made a strong impression on early European observers and they were widely written about and illustrated throughout the 19th century. Signed in plate. On laid paper.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing.
