A charming watercolour painting by the British artist John Thomas Selwin Ibbetson, depicting a view of Frinton Church, near Walton, Essex. Signed 'J.T. Selwin' to the lower right-hand corner. Artist's name and title inscribed on the reverse. Well-presented in a washline card mount and in a distressed gilt effect frame. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and minor surface marks. Some scuffs and small dents to the frame.

Artist Biography

John Thomas Ibbetson, later Sir John Thomas Selwin, 6th Bart (sometimes Selwyn), was born at Godstone, Surrey in 1789. He studied at Otley, Halifax; Eton College and admitted as a pensioner on 2 July 1801, at St John's College, Cambridge, where he gained his B.A. degree in 1805. Ibbetson exhibited his drawings at the Royal Academy 1811-1812 and at Walter Fawkes's exhibition in 1817. He lived at Bosmere Hall, Creeting St Mary, Suffolk for many years, and painted watercolours of many views in the area, including many of his or of his relations properties.
