A dramatic harbour scene by the British marine and landscape artist John Sutton. Many hands can be seen along the cobbled sidewalk, loading and unloading a multitude of ships at low tide. The artist has signed in pencil to the lower right and the watercolour has been well-presented in a fine gilt-effect frame with a crisp white mount. On watercolour paper.

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.

Artist Biography

John Sutton studied at the Norwich School of Art. He obtained a National Diploma in design and painting followed by a Postgraduate study at the Brighton College of Art and Craft.

Following a number of years teaching art, an exhibition of his work was held at the Spencer Gallery, London, which subsequently enabled him to concentrate on painting full time.

Subsequent exhibitions were successfully held in the USA, specifically Boston and South Carolina.

From 1980 to 2005, John Sutton’s work was held predominantly at the Eaton Gallery, London. Today his paintings are held in private collections worldwide and his work is featured in authoritative reference books like Denys Brook-Hart’s “20th Century British Marine Painting.”
