Description
John Skinner Prout - Superb Original Mid 19th Century Graphite Drawing. Finely executed John Prout drawing. On card laid on paper. Signed lower right corner. Signed. Condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.John Skinner Prout (1805-1876) was born in Plymouth, England. Although his uncle was the leading English watercolourist Samuel Prout (1783-1852), he seems to have been largely self-trained. Prout was one of the most talented artists who worked in colonial Australia. In his landscapes he was mainly concerned with revealing picturesque views, and exploring the effects of light and colour, rather than with topographical accuracy. His work influenced a number of colonial artists, such as Conrad Martens in New South Wales and Francis Simpkinson in Tasmania.Size
