John O'Connor was born in Leicester in 1913. Whilst a student at the RCA, his tutors included Eric Ravilious and John Nash. Ravilious was responsible for O'Connor's first commission to illustrate 'Here's Flowers' for the Golden Cockerel Press in 1937. From 1948–1964 O'Connor was the head of Colchester College of Art, and subsequently a visiting lecturer at St Martin's School of Art.
