An original 1675 copper engraving of 'The Road from Oxford to Coventry continued to Derby' strip map with later hand colouring, by John Ogilby (1600-1676). This fine survival is from The Britannia atlas, and shows the route from Oxford to Derby, through Coventry and Ashby de la Zouch. Well-presented in a Hogarth style frame with gilt effect details, as shown. With page number '82' in the lower right corner. Unsigned and inscribed. On laid.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some surface discolouration, foxing and a stain to the left side of the centre. With plate lines. The frame has only minor scuffing.

Artist Biography

John Ogilby (1600-1676) was a Scottish translator, impresario and cartographer. Best known for publishing the first British road atlas, he was also a successful translator, noted for publishing his work in handsome illustrated editions.In 1674 Ogilby had been appointed "His Majesty's Cosmographer and Geographic Printer". The Britannia atlas of 1675 set the standard for the road maps that followed, and includes Ogilby's innovative one inch to the mile scale, numbered along the roads.
