John Newberry uses watercolours for painting buildings and landscapes because they can be used very fast and because he believes they have a natural brilliance on white paper which does not belong to oil painting. He completes pictures on the spot, relying on quick decisions to capture the atmosphere of light and sky. His views are always “wide angle” because, in his words, “one’s experience of a place is more than a small angle of vision can convey.” John Newberry studied architecture at Cambridge and fine art at Newcastle. He was Acting Head at the Ruskin School of Drawing and Fine Art at Oxford and now paints full time.
