Condition is good for a picture of this age with the exception of some very mild discolouration to the varnish and some minor spots of surface dirt in areas (which could be cleaned off). A very fine crack in the board to the upper left. A small are of abrasion to the upper right corner at the mount edge. Inspection under UV light shows no restoration.

John Moore was born in Woodbridge, Suffolk and he lived and worked in Woodbridge most of his life. In his early career he was a house painter and sign writer, but he quickly became know for his paintings, predominantly his seascapes. He exhibited at the Ipswich Exhibitions of Fine Art and Industries from 1868, and he joined the Ipswich Art Club in 1874. He had his first exhibition with the Club in 1875 and exhibited regularly throughout his career. For a time he was commissioned by the Cobbold family of Ipswich to paint the landscapes of Scotland and northern England, as well as Norfolk scenes. He carried on living in Ipswich after the death of his first wife, and after the death of his second wife he moved to Diss in Norfolk, where he lived with his friend George Scolding.
