Artist Biography

A highly respected artist and sculptor, John Mitchell (1943-2014) was best known for his abstract, geometric paintings and sculptural works based on proportional systems including the Fibonacci sequence. He was born in Surrey and studied at Kingston College of Art, where he demonstrated a natural aptitude for observation and spatial awareness. Much influenced by American conceptual artists Robert Rauschenberg and Jasper Johns, his first solo exhibition at Camden Arts Centre in 1972 consisted of twelve very large square canvases, predominantly blue-grey. In 1978 he was the final recipient of the distinguished Gregory Fellowship at Leeds University, following in the footsteps of Terry Frost. Major solo exhibitions soon followed, including at the Ikon Gallery and Galerie Swart in Amsterdam. Mitchell was interested in the very nature of colour and form and in the way geometrically identical shapes can deceive the eye by the manner in which they are related, on paper or canvas. Mitchell was a revered art tutor to many, holding the post of Senior Painting Lecturer at Stourbridge College and later teaching at Birmingham School of Art. In 1987, Mitchell joined the staff at Wimbledon School of Art as a Principal Lecturer. He retired in 2003 as Head of Fine Art. The Arts Council of Great Britain and Leeds City Art Gallery hold examples of his work.
