A view of waves crashing on the shoreline with the sails of boats visible on the horizon. Presented glazed in a gold mount and a distressed gilt-effect wooden frame. Signed to the lower-left edge. On watercolour paper.

Condition

There is foxing and discolouration, primarily to the sky. There are some mild marks to the glazing and mount and some scratches to the frame.

Artist Biography

John McDougal RCA (1851-1945) was a painter of coastal scenes mainly in watercolours who lived in Liverpool and Anglesey. He showed at the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, Fine Art Society, Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, Royal Academy, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Cambrian Academy, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours, Royal Scottish Academy, and the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour. He was a member of the Liver Sketching Club. He died at Cemaes Bay, Anglesey and examples of his work can be found at the Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery and Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool.
