Description

A striking lino print depicting *The Merchant's Tale* by Geoffrey Chaucer. In the story, the elderly knight January marries the young maiden May, who falls in love with January's young attendant, Damian. After January goes blind, Damian hides in a pear tree so that he and May can make love. At this moment, the god Pluto restores January's sight, intending to punish May's deceit. However, his wife Proserpina provides May with a credible excuse because men are so lecherous. Thanks to Proserpina, May provides the credible excuse that January's sight is faulty - like awakening from deep sleep when the eyes are not yet accustomed to bright light and see strange things dimly. Signed and dated in graphite to the lower right. Numbered 1/50. Smartly presented in a black frame. On paper.

Condition

Foxing to the paper. Very minor wear to the frame.
