Overall the appearance of this portrait is beautiful. The paint layer is sound and stable and the colours are still clear and crisp. Inspection under UV light shows no signs of restoration. A new varnish layer has been applied. The frame is in good condition.

John Horsburgh was a Scottish studio photographer and portrait painter who worked and resided in Edinburgh. He held a studio on Princes Street, Edinburgh, and practised under the name 'John Horsburgh and Son'. His portraits have achieved huge success on the auction market, most notably his portrait of Mary Queen of Scots seen at Sotheby's, London.
