Description
A fine 19th Century engraving with hand colouring, of the Viscount Bridport in military uniform in front of a naval battle, taken from "Portraits of Illustrious Personages of Great Britain," 1869. The engraving has been presented in a simple gilt frame with a burgundy car mount. On ove.Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration.

Artist Biography
Line, stipple and occasional mezzotint engraver from Bolton. Apprenticed to James Heath between 1814-1818. Set up initially as a book-illustrator. Engraved portraits and prints after popular contemporary painters, e.g. Landseer. Fought a long battle to win respect from the RA as a line-engraver 1826-1855. Eventually elected ARA in 1856. Exhibited 5 works at RA. Became a Justice of the Peace for Sussex in his later years in Petworth.
The BM has a large collection of his work, including many progress proofs. The V&A also has substantial holdings of his work. See also Henry Robinson (fl.1827-72) whose style is close but is not the same man.
