John Hall Thorpe (1874-1947) was born in Australia but moved to London in 1902, where he attended Heatherley’s School of Art. He was a member of the Grosvenor School of Modern Art. By 1919 he had begun to make the style of colour woodcut which made him famous. He held his first one-man show of his colour woodcuts in London in 1918 to great success. His brightly coloured woodcuts were created to provide bright, colourful decoration as a reaction against what he saw as the dull, laborious realism in people’s homes at the time.
