Minor surface marks and abrasions to the upper third. A light, even patina of age is present across the surface of the artwork. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. The artwork is in very good condition for its age.

John Gilbey Bowles (1929–2011) was a painter and printmaker, born in Matlock, Derbyshire. He studied at Gravesend School of Art and the Royal College of Art, where he won a scholarship in his fourth year. He exhibited widely, including at the Royal Academy, the Redfern Gallery, and numerous provincial galleries. For most of his career, he taught printmaking and drawing at Hammersmith School of Art, the Ruskin School of Drawing, and the London Polytechnic. He was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1952.
