John Emanuel was born in Bury, Lancashire in 1930. At the outbreak of WWII he moved with his parents to Barrow in Furness. Upon arrival, he was immediately evacuated to a farm on Shap Fell. After the war and finishing school, he completed an apprenticeship in painting and decorating. It wasn't until he attended a series of talks at Manchester University that he was introduced to art.
In 1964 his interest in the subject deepened and he moved to Cornwall where he worked full-time, allowing him to continue painting. It was ten years before he had his first exhibition. Since the early 1980s, John Emmanuel has lived in St Ives, working from a Porthmeor Studio overlooking Porthmeor Beach.
