A significant and atmospheric continental interior scene by the British Victorian artist John Eaton Walker (c.1824-1896) in oil on canvas. Entitled 'Rival Claimants', the artist depicts a cosy and tangible cottage interior, with a small boy sitting beside a window with a dog and a cat on a stool.
The subtle treatment on light on the scene highlights areas of fine detail, such as the undulating tiled floor, while maintaining a dramatic yet soft overall aesthetic. This composition evokes an attitude and style suggestive of a continental rural dwelling, with fine brushwork and an accurate depth of field.
Well-presented in a substantial gilt wooden frame with sanded flat, corner mouldings and ribbon twist beading, as shown.
Signed and dated and inscribed. On canvas on stretchers.The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, craquelure and a spot of paint loss to the left edge. Inspection under UV light reveals some restoration to the lower left quadrant. The frame has some cracks, marks and scuffing, with a small area of consolidated fragmentation to the lower right corner of the slip.
