John Dolye (1797-1868) was a political cartoonist, caricaturist, painter and lithographer who worked under the pen name "H. B". He was born in Dublin to a Dublin silk merchant. He was first recognised as a painter in London after exhibiting his 'Turning out the Stag' at the Royal Academy in 1825. He also painted miniatures, but later found great success from his political cartoons, which could be reproduced in the new method of lithography. He worked under the pen name 'H.B' and kept his identity secret until 1843 when he revealed it in a letter to Robert Peel. His son, Richard Doyle, walked in his father's footsteps and worked in the style made famous by Punch magazine. His other sons were also artistic; Henry Edward Doyle became director of the National Gallery of Ireland, James William Edmund Doyle was an illustrator and Charles Altamont Doyle was a painter and the father of Sir Artur Conan Doyle, the author of Sherlock Holmes.
