John de Mansfield Absolon was the son of the watercolour painter John Absolon (1815–95) - he served in the Queen’s Rifles and exhibited paintings and sketches with the Society of British Artists before first visiting Western Australia in 1869. An entry for this artist can be found in the database at Design & Art Australia Online, which gives his date and the details: "This artist's son operated the Geraldton Lead Mines and international cargo ships. His watercolour works included landscape sketches and scenes of shipboard life, studies of flora and fauna and bush scenes, notably views from his home east of Perth, WA."
