A fine and vibrant landscape work by the British artist John Cherrington (1931-2015), depicting a rural country lane with a standing figure, turned away from the viewer with a walking stick. The tall hedges are characteristic of Devon, England, and the artist has chosen a distinct post-impressionist pastel palette. Cherrington's art historical knowledge allows him to combine traditional techniques with a contemporary approach, to develop his own distinctive style. His brushwork here is gently layered, and his careful management of texture draws the eye further into the scene.

John Cherrington was born in 1931. He studied at Hornsea Art College, and moved to Paris at the age of 16 to study art and art history. Cherrington served in the Army for eight years, and afterwards qualified as an art teacher. He taught art in London until moving to Herefordshire in 1977.
Cherrington was a prolific but relatively unknown painter, due to his shyness and unwillingness to put forward his work. Despite this reluctance, many of his paintings were accepted by the Royal Society of Portrait Painters between 1969 and 1974. His wonderful sketches of local characters are full of expression and talent. He produced paintings of bulls for local farmers, and was known to sketch customers in pubs.
Cherrington said his art was “stimulated by the visual world around him, which he found both tormenting and marvellous”.
Cherrington passed away in 2015 in North Wales.
