John Cheltenham Wake - 1870 Oil Cetara Coastline

Description

A small boat navigates tempestuous waters off the coast of Cetara on Italy's Amalfi Coast. The impressive Torre di Cetara looks over the scene, while distant mountains rise beyond the coastal town. The work is signed to the lower left and is well presented in a gilt frame with a fluted cove and foliate running pattern. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration and craquelure. Evidence of restorative work, including a canvas tear repair and areas of overpainting. Wear and small losses to the paint around the edges of the canvas. Wear to the frame, including scuffs and cracking. Parts of the frame mouldings have been restored and repainted. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age and presents well.
