A fine watercolour painting with gouache details on wove, laid to backing card, depicting a study of angel's trumpet flowers. The delicate brushwork and the realistic nature of this painting greatly illustrate the artist's proficiency in the medium. First visible signature to the lower right-hand corner is not the original John Brett's signature, however, we believe the second signature below to be the artist's. Signed.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including discolouration and surface marks. Some surface scratching to the upper right-hand quadrant. Repaired tears to the margins, mainly to the lower edge. Some very small tears to the upper margin, which can be hidden by framing.

Artist Biography

John Brett (1831-1902) was a painter associated with the Pre-Raphaelite movement, and best known for his detailed landscapes. The artist was born in Bletchingley, near Reigate, Surrey. The son of a veterinary surgeon attached to the 12th Lancers, he spent the first fifteen years of his life with his family following the regiment.
