John Barlow Wood began his career as a ceramic painter for Minton before becoming a professional portrait and landscape artist. He worked in Oxford in 1894 and then in Woodbridge, Suffolk, from 1897. His father died at Woodbridge in 1906 when John Barlow moved to Ipswich and married Emily Fry - they moved to Kendal where he was a member of the Lake Artists Society between 1914-1931 but on the death of his wife he returned to Ipswich. He exhibited 'Early Spring' at the Royal Academy and also exhibited at the Royal Society of Artists, the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, the Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and the Society of British Artists 1894-1911. He was a member of the Ipswich Art Club from 1895 till 1927 and at their centenary exhibition in 1974 his watercolour 'River Scene with Barge' was on show.
