Johannes Vollevens I - 1709 Oil Portrait of a Lady in Ruffled Lace

A fine early 18th century portrait by the Dutch Golden Age artist Johannes Vollevens I (1649–1728). The elderly subject wears an elaborate white pleated cap with tiered ruffles framing her face, paired with a wide, stiffly pleated ruff-like collar at her neck. Her gown is a plain black dress with voluminous sleeves, set off by wide white lace cuffs at the wrists. A jewelled clasp or brooch fastens the neckline, and a small jewelled ornament pins the sleeve near her right shoulder. The piece is executed with exquisite sensitivity to its subject and demonstrates accomplished, assured brushwork. Signed and dated to the right. According to a Latin inscription, the artist painted the work in The Hague. Beautifully presented in an ornate oval frame with a delicate floral pattern. On canvas on stretchers.
