A tranquil marine scene by Johanna Dill-Malburg (1859-1944). A yellow-sailed fishing boat rests in calm waters, while other sailing boats and a windmill can be seen beyond, set against a backdrop of billowing clouds. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. On board.

Condition

Overall the condition is very good for a picture of this age. Discolouration to the paint layer. Some cracking and losses to the frame, most notably to the lower left corner. The lower right corner has been remoulded.

Artist Biography

Johanna Dill-Malburg (née Pflugmacher) was a German-Hungarian painter of landscapes and still lifes. She studied at the School of Applied Arts of the Museum of Art and Industry in Vienna. She would later move to Dachau, where she took painting lessons from Felix Bürger. Bürger introduced her to Ludwig Dill, who she married in 1909. He would become a strong influence on her work in terms of composition and colour. Examples of her work can be found in the Dachau Picture Gallery and the Mannheim Art Gallery.
