An exquisite floral mezzotint from Johann Weinmann’s Phytanthoza Iconographia, 1737-1745. These rare and beautiful prints represent one of the most outstanding and innovative achievements in botanical illustration. The engraver, J.J. Haid printed many of the illustrations utilizing a new mezzotint technique pioneered by the Englishman, Kirkall, to produce 1,025 hand colored engravings.
The beautiful hand coloured mezzotint has been handsomely presented in a contemporary gilt effect frame with a pale green mount with beautiful hand marbling and finished with glazing.
On laid.The print is in remarkable condition, given its age. The hand colouring has slight fading, to be expected of a piece this age. The original plate lines are visible and in tact. The frame is in fine condition. There is a watermark along the lower edge of the mount.

Johann Wilhelm Weinmann (13 March 1683 Gardelegen, Germany – 1741), apothecary and botanist, is noted for his creation of the florilegium Phytanthoza iconographia between 1737 and 1745, an ambitious project which resulted in eight folio volumes with more than 1,000 hand-coloured engravings of several thousand plants.
