An extremely finely painted watercolour study with pen and ink detail by prolific Austrian artist Johann Wilhelm Frey. Frey’s drawing style has an architectural quality to it. The incredible attention to detail, geometric form and fine rendering of the ornately decorated theatre beautifully captures this grand focal point. Sitting amongst Vienna’s elaborate Baroque-style architecture Volkstheater was intended to bring theatre to a larger section of the population. Here Frey has depicted the hive of activity surrounding this public space with a range of characters going about their daily lives. This artwork has been fixed at the upper edges to backing card which has been inscribed to the lower edge. Signed to the lower left corner of the artwork in red watercolour paint. On wove.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. There is a crease across the upper left corner and a pinhole mark to the adjacent sky area. With some light foxing visible to the sky area and scuffing to the lower edge.

Artist Biography
Born in Rastatt, Germany Johann Wilhelm Frey predominantly lived and worked as a painting in Vienna, Austria. Although we have little biographical information other than census records it is clear Frey was a talented draughtsman and has achieved much commercial success with a number of important European auction houses.
