Description

Joan Lewis - Original Contemporary Monotype. Inscribed on the reverse 'JL Wed am'. Unsigned. In fine condition.

Joan Lewis was a foundation student at the City Literary Institute, London from 1989-90, and obtained a Certificate in Fine Art at St Albans in 1993. Local to Bradford-on-Avon, she has exhibited widely, including exhibitions at Hertfordshire College of Art and Design, and Highgate Society Meeting Room, in the 1990s.

She was an experimental printmaker, using the print medium to explore the anatomy of the human body, as well as mental, emotional and relationship themes. The repetitions and variations in her etchings and monotypes, working in a variety of techniques, colours and textures, show the artist’s enduring enquiry into these profound human subjects.

Her work in oil is expressive and thought-provoking, engaging with questions of identity and family relationships through colour and composition. Lewis has said: “My work is to do with relationships and isolation; a lack of communication between people who, although physically close, or related to each other, are emotionally distant. This introversion and lack of connection may result in unspoken conflict.”
