John Masey Wright (1777-1866) was born in Pentonville, London. His father was an organ builder, and for some time Wright followed in his father's footsteps. However, he would later pursue art instead. Wright apprenticed with Henry Aston Barker, painting the battle scenes in Barker's panorama in the Strand, and also worked as a scene painter at the opera house. However, he is best known for his small studies illustrating the works of William Shakespeare, Oliver Goldsmith, and others. He exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1812-1818, and was elected a member of the Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours in 1825.
