Artist Biography

James William Whittaker OWS (1828-1876) was an artist from Manchester. He began his career as an engraver but soon turned to drawing. He moved to North Wales, where, with the possible exception of a trip to Switzerland and Italy in about 1864 and a Northern journey in the late 1860s, he remained for the rest of his life. He was elected AOWS and OWS in 1862 and 1864 respectively. He died from a fall into the Llugwy when collecting his painting gear. His subjects are almost all North Welsh views. Examples of Whittaker's work are in the Victoria and Albert Museum and Manchester Art Gallery.
