James Valentine Jelley (1856-1943) - 1916 Watercolour Hydrangeas

Description

A fine and accomplished watercolour painting by the British artist James Valentine Jelley. The scene depicts hydrangea flowers, some in a pewter flagon.The use of colour, the delicate brushstrokes and the overall structure of the composition, clearly highlight the artist's proficiency in the subject and medium. Signed and dated to the lower right-hand corner and to the reverse. On watercolour paper, laid down on card. Well-presented in a white card mount, in a gilt slip and in a speckled gilt effect frame.

Condition

In fine condition overall with minor discolouration. Small scuffs and scratches to the frame.

Artist Biography

James Valentine Jelley (1856-1943) was a painter born in Lincoln. He studied firstly at Lincoln School of Art and then at Birmingham School of Art in the early years of the 20th century. The 'Art Student' a short-lived illustrated student magazine (1885-1887), reproduced one of Jelley's works in their January 1886 issue. He was the husband of Edith Mary Jelley and he was elected a member of the RBSA and held the position of President from 1932-1935. He also showed at the RA, RI, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool and FAS. Paintings by Jelley are housed at BMAG, Leamington Spa Art Gallery and the Usher Gallery. He died in Knowle, Warwickshire.
