An ethereal late 19th Century landscape in oil, with later overpainted details, signed by the artist James Stewart. This interesting piece depicts a traditional picturesque landscapes, likely to be in the highlands of Scotland, with rolling hills and a loch. Cattle and sheep rest in a bucolic manner at the shore. The work has been rendered altogether more dreamlike with the addition of light violet brushwork by a later hand. Presented in a grey painted wooden frame, with corner mouldings, as shown. Signed. On canvas board.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and small areas of abrasion. There is some scattered surface restoration, mainly two scratches near the left side which have been overpainted, and a repaired canvas tear to the lower edge. The frame has lost some moulding to the lower two corners, with some historic surface restoration.
