Artist Biography
James Priddey was painter and printmaker born in Handsworth, Birmingham, he attended Moseley Road School of Art 1928-31 where he was taught by Ralph Sargisson and spent a further four years at Birmingham School of Art, 1931-35 where his principal teacher was Harold Holden. During this time, he also studied under Bernard Cuzner of the Department of Silversmithing at Vittoria Street, Hockley, Birmingham. His association with the RBSA began in the early 1950’s and he was elected a fully member in 1960. He held the posts of Secretary from 1964-74 and President from 1974-78. He exhibited at the Paris Salon, RA, RSA, RWA, RCamA, RBA and RE of which he was an elected member. In 1967 Priddey held a solo exhibition at Bilston Art Gallery and examples of his work are in the collections of Dudley Museum and Art Gallery, BMAG, Bradford Art Gallery, Southport Art Gallery and South London Art Gallery. His work was regularly reproduced in the Birmingham Post and he was the father of artist Nigel James Priddey.
