Born in Arran, Kay studied at the Glasgow School of Art, where he became an adept artist in both oil and watercolour. A painter of landscapes, townscapes and marines, he worked in his native Scotland and abroad, notably in France and Holland, where he achieved considerable success. Kay exhibited at the RA and at the Paris Salon. He won a silver medal at the Sociète des Amis des Arts, Rouen, 1903, a gold medal at the Société des Artistes Francais, 1903 and a gold medal at the Municipal des Beaux-Arts, 1906.
