James Heath after Benjamin West - 1811 Engraving The Death Of Lord Nelson

Description

A historically important engraving of considerable size, engraved by James Heath (1757-1834) after Benjamin Heath (1738-1820). The engraving shows a dramatic and atmospheric etching full of movement and tension. Lord Viscount Nelson is seen lying wounded in the midst of the Battle of Trafalgar. all the men, including the Spanish enemies have turned away from their brawl to look with dismay as Nelson is read his last rites before he dies.

Heath was an accomplished engraver who was picked by Benjamin West (the second president and one of the founders of the Royal Academy) himself. The pair teamed up to publish many notable engravings together towards the end of their careers.

The engraving is presented in a smart, thin, black, glazed frame. There is a label attached to the back with information on the origin of the collaboration and an insight into the provenance of this particular print.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including heavy discolouration. There is some foxing across the surface. The frame is in good condition with some surface scuffs.

Artist Biography

Benjamin West PRA (October 10, 1738 - March 11, 1820) was a American-born artist, who painted famous historical scenes such as The Death of Nelson, The Death of General Wolfe, and Benjamin Franklin Drawing Electricity from the Sky.

Entirely self-taught, West soon gained valuable patronage, and he toured Europe, eventually settling in London. He impressed George III and was largely responsible for the launch of the Royal Academy, of which he became the second president (after Sir Joshua Reynolds). He was appointed historical painter to the court and Surveyor of the King's Pictures.
