James Hargreaves Morton was a painter and architect born in Darwen, Lancashire, In 1889 he was awarded a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Art and after graduating he taught art for a year in Darlington before in 1905 returning to Darwen where he worked as a painter and etcher for most of his life. Although the 1911 census records him as a wallpaper painter and decorator. He exhibited at the Walker Art Gallery, the Royal Academy and the International Society of Sculptors, Painters & Gravers.
In 1916 he was conscripted into the Army and on 5 November 1918 was killed while serving with the 1/5 East Lancashire Battalion. A drawing of a memorial and fountain by Morton which was exhibited at the Royal Academy is illustrated in Academy Architecture, 1907. Morton is given as an architect, however, he is not known to have ever practised in this profession.
An exhibition of his pastels, paintings and etchings was held at the Peter Scott Gallery in 2005 at the University of Lancaster in Preston. Blackburn Museum and Art Gallery hold several examples of his paintings.
