Description

James Guitet - Original 1962 Print. Limited edition print - 4/20. Signed and dated. In fine condition.

James Guitet (1925-2010) studied at the School of Fine Arts in Nantes from 1942 to 1945 and began addressing non-figurative painting in 1948. He participated in the Salon of New Realities in 1953 and made his first exhibition in 1954 at the Arnaud (Paris). His relief prints translate as austere but delicately nuanced compositions, highly architected structures of the physical constitution of the world to create what he called "an imaginary geology in an imaginary space." Later, he returned to traditional painting on canvas, by engaging in "dialectical interplay of smooth surfaces and rough reliefs." Similarly, in etching, it uses the same usual techniques, such as a chisel, and new methods by inking textures or made of natural materials (such as fabrics), realising personal expression in this field. He also adapted to the creation of movable objects and architecture (Textigravure, 1961). In 1969-70, he worked for the national factories of Sevres and Goblins. His research led him to decorate the entrance hall of a Parisian building (1971) and to build a house near Montreal (1972). His work is represented in museums in Paris (MAM), Marseille, Nantes, Toulouse, Helsinki, Prague.
