A bright and verdant landscape by James Elliot (b.1850). Figures walk through undergrowth dotted with vibrant purple lupins towards an expansive view that opens before them. Signed to the lower right. Well presented in a gilt-effect frame with floral corner ornamentation. On board.

Condition

The condition is good for a picture of this age. Slight discolouration. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. Minor wear to the frame.

Artist Biography

James Elliot (b.1850) was a landscape painter born in Scotland. He exhibited at the Royal Academy between 1884 and 1897 and also at the Suffolk Street Gallery in London. He lived in Betws-y-Coed in Wales, and primarily painted the Welsh landscape. Betws-y-Coed was a thriving centre for artists during the 1800s and became known as the first artists' colony in Britain.
