A wild and rugged landscape serves as the setting for this romantic scene. Lovers embrace while a faithful dog stands beside them, perhaps serving as a symbol of loyalty. Although the story depicted is unknown, James Eckford Lauder was known to draw inspiration from Shakespeare and other literary sources. Signed and indistinctly inscribed to the reverse. Well presented in a gilt frame with beaded and acanthus running patterns. On canvas laid to panel.

Signs of wear consistent with age, including discolouration to the varnish and small areas of craquelure. Areas of overpainting. Marks and scuffs to the frame.

Artist Biography

James Eckford Lauder was a Scottish painter, mainly of portraits and religious subjects. He was the younger brother of Robert Scott Lauder, from whom he received early artistic training. He then attended the Edinburgh Academy from 1824 to 1828, before travelling to Italy with his brother, where they studied and made copies of the old masters. The subjects of his early work were largely drawn from Scott, Shakespeare and his Italian surroundings. Upon his return to Edinburgh he became an annual contributor to the Exhibitions of the Royal Scottish Academy, and exhibited occasionally at the Royal Academy in London.
