Description
This pastoral scene depicts a group of figures gathered on a rocky shoreline, with a woman serving as the central focal point amongst children and a dog, all set against a backdrop of rolling hills and distant sailing vessels. Likely to be the Cornish coast in the South of England. The artist has employed warm, golden tones throughout the composition, creating a harmonious balance between the intimate human subjects in the foreground and the sweeping landscape that extends across rolling countryside to the tranquil waters beyond. Well presented in an ornate gilt effect frame. Label to the reverse gives the date of the picture as 1858 and inscribed with the artist's name. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The canvas has been relined and the artwork has undergone some restoration. This has been done to a high standard. There is some craquelure to the surface. Minor marks and scuffs to the frame. The condition is typical for a picture of this age, including some surface dirt and discolouring to the varnish.
